Making A Vision Board + Staying Motivated
It's been awhile since I've done a #MotivationalMonday post but I was inspired by recent conversations with a few people and so, here we are. The fact that people have reached out to me because I inspire them is incredibly humbling. A main goal of my, and one of my purposes I believe, is to motivate and inspire others with my story and through living my truth. A question I've been asked a lot lately is how/why/who taught me about creating a vision board and how do I stay motivated. So let me break it down for you.
WHY YOU NEED A VISION BOARD
I honestly don't recall where or from whom I got the idea to create a vision board for myself. I read a lot so it was probably a book (but I'd remember that), an article, or a teacher. Either way I've always put my thoughts and dreams out into the universe. Back then it wasn't a popular trend or concept like it is now so it wasn't something I talked about with people much. I didn't create a physical vision board for myself until much later. Creating a vision board is a great way to take the ideas and aspirations you have from your mind and putting it on paper. There are no rules when it comes to making a vision board so don't hold yourself back by thinking you're doing it wrong. There is no wrong or right way.
SUPPLIES:
- Scissors
- Glue
- Tape
- Thumbtacks
- Magazines
- Poster Board (or any large white card stock)
Start by thinking of things that inspire you; words, quotes, people, etc and write them down. Now think of what you want from life, what your dreams are, goals you have for yourself. Think BIG!!!!! But also think of everything in between. For example, my board is filled with acting related goals; people I'd love to work with, shows I want to be on etc. But I also included personal stuff like a picture of a wedding dress (because I'd like to get married one day), and an image of a super fit woman (because I got some serious fitness goals!). Catch my drift? You then want to look for images that reflect your goals to put on your board. Initially I spent hours flipping through magazines but it was hard to find exactly what I was looking for. So a more cost effective and simple way to do this is by searching in Google and printing the pictures out. Start gluing or taping your images on to the board. Again, no rules here. JUST HAVE FUN! Put on some music, have a glass of wine handy (don't get too tipsy though!) and enjoy putting together the physical representation of what lives in your brain. When you're done hang it in a place where its visible so you can look at it every dam day. In those moments when you feel like giving up, look at your board. Look at the words, quotes, and dreams you have and keep going. Keep working towards them.
STAYING MOTIVATED
Listen, life is unpredictable. Sometimes it gets really hard and we think that with every obstacle thrown at us, it takes us 3 steps back. Obstacles are a part of life. Look at them as minor detours you must overcome in order to get yourself back on the path you need to be on. You simply cannot let every single little thing prohibit you from working hard to achieve something. This is the mentality I've had and continue to have while working on the things I want to make happen. I often ask myself, "how bad do you want it?," and so I urge you to ask yourself the same thing. How bad do you want it, really? What are you willing to do, willing to sacrifice? In order to stay motivated, I have to have these honest conversations with myself, I look at my vision board, I revisit my plan and adjust if necessary. I do what I have to do. I keep going.
I truly hope that this post helped you in some way. I hope it has inspired and motivated you to get to work!! It's not easy. I'll be the first to admit that. But just imagine how sweet it will be once you achieve something. Ain't that feeling worth it!? I think so.
I recently filmed a mini tour of my desk area aka creative space, and shared my vision board. Check it out & subscribe to my YouTube channel!
