The Acting Industry Is Changing, Here's Why & Tips to Navigate It
“Are you still doing the acting thing?” I have always hated this question, common among those not in the industry. I never quite understood the need to add “thing” at the tail end of their question. No other profession would be referred to that way. However, I was recently asked this by a fellow actor I once worked with, and I have to admit, it caught me by surprise. But after a few minutes of catching up, it was clear to me how much even other actors associate your activity, aka “still doing the acting thing” by what they see on social media. To be clear and fair, I’ve never been the type to post about every little thing. When I have something to say or share, I’ll do that. Moving in silence and letting my work speak for itself is more my M.O.
But with the industry's current state, forever changing and seemingly at a standstill, that dreadful question will likely pop up more often than ever before, by dream slayers and chasers alike. And if you’re the latter, you might be feeling a great sense of uncertainty with the constant shifts in the industry and the decrease in productions. As someone who has been riding the acting wave since I was a kid, I have learned to release the need to control and tame my anxiety.
